중대한 이유 - A grave reason

일전에 어떤 학자 한 분을 만났다. 그분께 왜 그 분야를 공부하게 되셨는지를 물었다. 내심 영성적이고 심각한 이유를 기대하면서... 그런데 그분의 답변은 너무도 평범하고 필연성이 없어 보이는 소소한 것이었다...

Once I met a scholar. I asked him why he chose that field of studies, expecting a rather spiritual and grave reason... But his answer seemed to be so plain and lacked necessity to me...

어떤 일을 하는 데에 반드시 그럴 수밖에 없는 필연적이고도 심중한 이유가 있어야만 하는 것일까. 살아가다 보면 꼭 그렇지만도 않은 것 같다. 그렇다면 성찰 없이 대충대충 사는 것과 그저 순리대로 살아가는 것의 차이는 무엇일까.

Do we need a necessary and grave reason to do something? Well, it may not be always the case. Then what is difference between living a life without thinking or living a life following the Providence?

어떤 선택을 위해서 중대한 이유가 있어야만 한다는 생각은 버리는 것이 나을 것 같다. 하지만 이왕에 선택한 것이라면 중대한 이유가 있기라도 한듯이 수행하는 것도 필요하리라.

Perhaps it is better to give up the notion that we need a grave reason to choose something. However, if something is chosen, it is better to perform the duties evolved in it as if there existed a grave reason.
