남는 것은 사랑 - Love which remains to the last

풍경화 전시회를 찾았다. 터너와 컨스터블로 대표되는 영국 풍경화와 이들이 프랑스 인상주의에 미친 영향을 주제로 삼은 전시회였다.

I recently visited an exhibition of landscape paintings. The theme of the exhibition was English lanscape painting mainly, though not entirely, represented by Turner and Constable, and their impact on French impressionism.

인물화와 정물화를 거쳐서 가장 마지막에 발전하게 되었다는 풍경화... 전시장을 가득 메운 나무, 구름, 호수, 바다, 가축들, 그리고 전원풍경을 보며 인간이 홀로 존재하는 것이 아니라 어머니처럼 인간을 감싸주는 자연이 있기에 존재할 수 있다는 생각을 하게 된다. 화가들이 그제서야 인간을 둘러싼 자연에 눈을 돌린 것이다. 더이상 인간만이 주인공이라는 착각을 버리고...

Landscape painting is a genre developed only after portrait, or depiction of people, and still-life. While looking at paintings of the trees, clouds, lakes, sea, livestock, and pastures, I came to think man cannot exist alone, but that he can exist only in the bossom of the mother nature. Maybe painters could turn their eyes only then to the surrounding nature. They could awaken their minds from the illusion of man's being the main character of the whole universe.

전시회 벽에는 문구들이 새겨져 있었는데, 어떤 풍경화 교본의 저자는 풍경화를 여러 가지 미술적 기교를 통해 인간에게 아름다움의 기쁨을 전해 주는 것이라고 정의내리고 있었다. 음... 풍경화를 그렇게 정의내리다니... 아무리 주제를 인간에서 자연으로 전환했다고 하더라도 결국은 인간 중심주의를 벗어날 수는 없는 것인가 싶었다.

On the walls of the exhibition hall were written some sentences. One of them was by a certain author of a textbook for landscape painting. According to his definition, landscape painting is to give aesthetic pleasure to human being through artistic skills of painting nature. Is that the definition for landscape painting? Well, I was a bit disappointed by his description. If then, even if painters turned their eyes from man to nature, it still was trapped in the idea of 'human-centeredness'.

그런데 우리들에게 작품을 설명해 주던 도슨트가 전시회 투어를 마치고 마지막으로 남긴 말은 어느 화가가 풍경화를 그리는 이유였다. 그것은 단지 그가 자연을 사랑하기 때문이란다...

But the docent who guided us throught the exhibition conveyed her final remark at the end of the tour from a landscape painter. It was about why he painted landscape. And the reason was because he loved nature.

우리가 아무리 노력하더라도 결코 우리의 시각에서 사물을 바라볼 수밖에 없다. 그러나 중요한 것은 그것에 사랑을 담는 것이 아닐까. 그럴 때에만 오만한 인간중심주의에서 자유로울 수 있는 것은 아닐런지...

Well, no matter how hard we try, we may only be able to see the world from our own restricted view. But the important thing is to put love in it. Only then we could be free from the proud notion of human-centeredness.
