쓸모 없음의 쓸모 - Usefulness of the Useless

헨리 나웬 신부님이 쓰신 어떤 책에서 중국에서 전래된 이야기를 하나 읽게 되었다.
In a Henri Nouwen's book I read an old story from Chnia.

목수 한 사람이 그의 제자와 함께 커다란 숲을 지나가고 있었다. 그들이 높고, 크며, 옹이가 지고, 오래되고, 아름다운 떡갈나무 앞을 지나게 되었을 때, 목수는 자신의 제자에게 물었다. "얘야, 너는 왜 이 나무가 이다지도 높고, 크며, 옹이가 지고, 오래되고, 아름다운지 알고 있느냐?"
제자는 스승을 바라보더니 말했다.
A carpenter and his apprentice were walking together through a large forest. And when they came across a tall, huge, gnarled, old, beautiful oak tree, the carpenter asked his apprentice: "Do you know why this tree is so tall, so huge, so gnarled, so old and beautiful?"
The apprentice looked at his master and said:

"잘 모르겠습니다...왜 그렇죠?"
"No ... why?"

스승의 대답은 다음과 같았다. "그건 말이다,이 나무가 쓸모 없는 나무이기 때문이지. 만약에 이 녀석이 쓸모가 있는 재목감이었다면 이미 오래 전에 베어져서 책상이나 의자로 만들어졌겠지. 허나 이 녀석은 쓸모가 없는 재목이었기 때문에 이렇게 높이, 아름답게 자라나 그늘을 주고 쉴 수 있는 공간을 제공해 주는 것이지."
"Well," the carpenter said, "because it is useless. If it had been useful it would have been cut long ago and made into tables and chairs, but because it is useless it could grow so tall and so beautiful that you can sit in its shade and relax."
