그리스도께 자유를! - Free your Christ!

'너는 나를 누구라고 생각하느냐'라는 예수님의 질문에 베드로는 너무도 당당하게 '하느님의 그리스도이십니다'하고 대답한다. 그런데 예수께서는 아무에게도 그 사실을 발설하지 말라고 하시더니 뜬금없이 당신의 '수난과 부활'을 '처음'으로 예고하신다. 당신께서 스스로 말씀하시는 그리스도는 '많은 고난을 겪고 원로들과 수석 사제들과 율법 학자들에게 배척을 받아 죽임을 당하였다가 사흘 만에 되살아나'는 분이다. 그 때 그 순간의 베드로와 제자들은 과연 그러한 그리스도 상을 있는 그대로 이해하고 진지하게 받아들일 수 있었을까.

When asked, 'Who do you think I am?', Peter answers Jesus 'The Christ of God!' with much confidence. On hearing the 'right' answer, Jesus sternly tells the disciples not to tell anyone about his identity. And he mentions for the first time about his 'Passion and Resurrection'. The image of Christ that Jesus himself is describing is the one 'who must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and also must be killed and on the third day be raised to life'. I wonder whether Peter and the disciples at that time fully understood his words and accepted this 'terrible' image of the Christ.

성경을 읽거나 강론을 들으면서 나에게 다가오는 예수님은 소외당하고 억압받는 이들을 위해 오신 분이었다. 교회가 '가난한 이들을 위한 우선적 선택'을 말하고 있듯이 예수께서는 가난한 이들을 위해 복음을 선포하신다. 하지만 과연 '소외당하고 억압받는 이들을 위해 오셨다'라는 언어적 표현만으로 그리스도를 다 담을 수 있을까. 그 표현이 전적으로 잘못 되었다기보다는 내가 생각하는 '소외'와 '억압'이라는 것이 예수 그리스도께서 생각하셨던 '소외'나 '억압'과 얼마나 일치하는 것인지 성찰해 볼 일이다.

When I read the Bible or hear homilies, I often draw the images of Jesus who came to the world for the excluded and persecuted. As the Church pronounces 'the option for the poor', Jesus proclaims the Gospel for the poor people. However, could the human expression of 'Jesus came to the world to free those who are excluded and persecuted' contain every aspect of the Christ? I do not mean to say this interpretation of mine(and perhaps many others) is totally wrong. I would just like to ask myself whether my understanding of 'exclusion' and 'persecution' perfectly match Jesus' understanding(if I dare use this verb 'understand' to him) of those terms.

베드로와 제자들은 자신들 나름의 그리스도 상을 가지고서 예수님을 따랐을 것이다. 나 역시 내가 생각하는 그분의 모습을 가지고 있을 터이다. 하지만 점점 드는 생각은 그리스도를 아무리 멋지게 정의(定義)내리더라도 그분은 항상 그 정의보다 더 크신 분일 것이라는 생각이다. 나도 모르게 그분을 내 선입견 속에 가두어 드리고 있지는 않을까. 그리하여 그분께서 스스로 말씀하고 계시는 당신의 진정한 모습에 대해서 알아듣지 못하고 있는 것은 아닐까. 그러니 눈을 크게 뜨고 귀를 활짝 열고 복음을 바라보아야 할 터이다. 그리스도를 그분 스스로 선포하시는대로 자유롭게 풀어드리자!

I am pretty much sure that Peter and his fellow brothers followed Jesus with their own image of the Messiah. I also have my own idea of who Jesus is or should be. But more recently I came to think that Jesus is always greater than my defintion of him. No matter how hard I try to describe him, he is always much more than what human words and ideas can contain. Maybe I am 'imprisoning' him into my own prejudice and therefore I am deaf and blind to his true image? So, I have to keep my eyes and ears wide open unto the Gospel. Let us free our Christ and receive him as he himself proclaims!

루카 복음 9,20-22

예수님께서 다시, "그러면 너희는 나를 누구라고 하느냐?" 하시자, 베드로가 "하느님의 그리스도이십니다."하고 대답하였다. 그러자 예수님께서는 제자들에게, 그것을 아무에게도 말하지 말라고 엄중하게 분부하셨다.

예수님께서는 이어서 "사람의 아들은 반드시 많은 고난을 겪고 원로들과 수석 사제들과 율법 학자들에게 배척을 받아 죽임을 당하였다가 사흘 만에 되살아나야 한다." 하고 이르셨다.

Luke 9,20-22

"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God."
Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.

And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."
