예수님의 미소, 천안함 장병들을 위해 - Smile of Jesus, for the sailors of the Corvette Cheonan

강건너편으로 가기 위해 배에 오른 제자들과 예수님. 예수님께서는 풍랑 속에서 두려워 하는 제자들을 두고서 편안하게 단잠을 즐기셨다. 아마도 부드러운 미소를 띠면서 주무시고 계시지 않았을까. 그분은 무슨 꿈을 꾸고 계셨을까. 그분은 무엇을 믿고 계셨을까.

Jesus and his disciples on board a ship bound for another side of the lake... Jesus was enjoying a deep sleep while the disciples were being scared to death in the middle of a windstorm. I assume he was sleeping with a smile on his face. What was he dreaming about? What was it that he was so sure about?

스페인의 하비에르 성에는 미소 띤 십자고상이 있다고 한다. 폭풍우가 몰아치는 뱃전에서 느긋한 잠을 주무셨다는 대목에서 문득 그 십자고상의 예수님이 떠오른다. 사지가 녹아드는 고통에 처하신 예수님의 얼굴에 미소가 떠오른 까닭은 무엇일까. 그런 예수님 얼굴을 조각한 사람의 마음엔 무엇이 서려 있었을까.

In Xavier Castle in Spain, there is a Cruxifix with a smile. I saw the photo of it once. These Lukan passages remind me of the smiling Jesus in the castle. Why was he smiling when he was actually going through terrible sufferings on the cross? What was on the sculptor's mind when he was carving it?

천안함 침몰로 많은 사람들이 슬퍼하고 있는 요즈음. 아까운 젊은 나이에 서해 바다에서 목숨을 잃은 젊은 장병들이 미소 띤 예수님과 함께 이제는 편안한 잠을 이루고 있기를 삼가 기도 올려본다.

These days in Korea, many people are mourning for the deaths of the navy soldiers who lost their lives in the sunken Corvette Cheonan, which was exploded and sank in unexplained circumstances off Baengnyeong Island in the West sea. I hope that these young sailors could rest at peace now with Jesus in Heaven. My sincere prayers and heartfelt condolences for their souls and their bereaved families.

[루카 복음 8,22-25]

어느 날 예수님께서 제자들과 함께 배에 오르시어 그들에게, "호수 저쪽으로 건너가자." 하고 이르시니, 그들이 출발하였다. 그들이 배를 저어갈 때에 예수님께서는 잠이 드셨다. 그 때에 돌풍이 호수로 내리 몰아치면서 물이 차 들어와 그들이 위태롭게 되었다. 제자들이 다가가 예수님을 깨우며, "스승님, 스승님, 저희가 죽게 되었습니다." 하고 말하였다. 그러자 예수님께서 깨어나시어 바람과 물결을 꾸짖으시니, 곧 잠잠해지며 고요해졌다. 예수님께서는 그들에게, "너희의 믿음은 어디에 있느냐?"하셨다. 그들은 두려워하고 놀라워하며 서로 말하였다. "도대체 이분이 누구시기에 바람과 물에게 명령하시고 또 그것들이 이분께 복종하는가?"

Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they launched out.
But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger.
They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm.
And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?"
