내가 존경하고 사랑하는 베네딕도 성인. 사람이 하느님의 사랑과 은총 없이는 얼마나 깊은 수렁에 빠져서 허우적댈 수 있는지, 얼마나 짙은 어두움에 신음하게 되는지 스스로 깊이 아셨을 분. ‘수도규칙서’를 쓰셨다는 이유로 자칫 딱딱하고 권위적인 이미지를 얻으셨을지도 모르겠다. 그러나 나는 그분이 사람이 어떤 존재인지를 이해하신 따뜻한 분이었을 거라고 믿는다. ‘규칙’은 인간의 나약함과 위대함을 동시에 아는 성인께서 우리를 위한 길잡이로 쓰셨을 터이다.
St Benedict, whom I deeply respect and admire. He must have known how dark and miserable man can be without the love and grace of God. Since he is known for his ‘Rules’, I am afraid he is sometimes unduly seen as cold and authoritarian for some. But, I firmly believe that he must be a man of warm heart who truly understood the true nature of human being. His ‘Rules’ must be a guide for us.

이 그림의 베네딕도 성인은 사사로운 감정을 넘어선 듯 하면서도 당신을 따라 하느님을 향해가는 순례자들을 사랑과 인자의 마음으로 바라보고 계시는 듯하다. 참된 거룩함을 추구한 삶을 살다보면 삶의 끝자락에서 하느님을 닮은 모습을 얻게 되는 것일까…
In this painting, the saint seems to have overcome any excessive emotions. Instead, his eyes are gazing at us, pilgrims on earth, with calm love and gentleness. After a life of genuine holiness, can I dare to say that his face finally comes to resemble his Maker, God the Father?
