이 그림 앞에서 발길을 멈추고 한참 들여다 보았다. 이상하게도 오래 들여다보고 싶은 느낌이 들었다. 다른 유명한 고전 화가들이 묘사한 성모님과 아기 예수님은 대체로 우아하고 아름다운데, 사실 이 그림에 담긴 성모님과 아기 예수님의 모습은, ‘못생기셨다’고 하기는 좀 죄송스럽고, ‘그닥 아름답지는 않으시다’고나 할까… 청초하고 아름다운 성모님, 순수하고 귀여우면서도 품위를 지닌 아기 예수님…이 아니라 옆집 수더분한 젊은 처자와 묵주를 만지작거리다가 뭔가 관심이 가는지 입을 벌리고 눈을 올려 든 평범하고 퉁실퉁실한 아기다. 우측 상단 배경에서 뒤늦게 뛰어들어 포즈를 잡는 듯한 동네 젊은이. 날개가 없었더라면 천사인지 모를 뻔했다.
In front of this painting, I stopped and stood still for a good while. It had a certain indescribable charm. Usually, Mary and Baby Jesus by other famous classical painters’ brush are more beautiful and elegant. In contrast, the Mary and Baby Jesus in this painting are ‘not so pretty’, if not ‘ugly’. Mary is not necessarily depicted as a pure and beautiful lady. Jesus is not so cute or dignified, either… Instead, we see a young, ordinary woman from next door and a chubby curious baby holding a rosary. I could have almost missed that the young man at the background was an angel, if there were no wings.

별로 ‘아름답지’는 않은데, 왠지 모르게 물끄러미 한없이 바라보게끔 하는 그림이다. 나자렛에서 예수님을 키우던 성모님은 비너스처럼 아름답고 범접 못할 도도한 여인이 아니라 그냥 편하게 다가서서 사는 얘기를 나눌 수 있는 그런 이웃집 젊은 엄마 같은 분이셨겠다 싶다. 예수님도 무슨 신기가 들린 애늙은이가 아니라 울고 떼쓰고 신기한 것에 눈을 못 떼는 평범한 아기의 모습을 하셨겠다 싶다. 그래서 이 분들이 더 친근하고 더 편안하게 느껴지나보다…
Well, not so ‘beautiful’ in a conventional sense, but I am somehow attracted to the painting. Looking at it, I get to think that Mary in Nazareth was not a Venusian figure with aloof and detached attitude or Child Jesus was not a precocious prodigy. They must have been friendly everyday family next door with whom I could share my life story… Most probably, that’s why I feel so close to this holy family…
