아담과 이브 - Adam and Eve

지금까지 아담과 이브를 묘사한 그림들은 많이 봤지만 조각을 본 것은 처음이다. 조각상이기에 내게 상대적으로 낯선 이 작품은 관람자로 하여금 유독 아담과 이브의 눈을 바라보게 하는 것 같다. 선악과를 따먹고 막 눈이 트인 이 두 사람. 홍채를 파낸 조각가의 솜씨가 남긴 두 사람의 눈은 휑한 공허함으로 가득하다… 하느님의 사랑이 주던 안락함에서 벗어나 처음 ‘죄’의 현실과 그것이 초래한 결과를 대면한 인간의 눈은 두려움으로 녹아 내린 공허함인가…
I have seen many paintings depicting Adam and Eve. But rarely did I see a sculpture of them. Therefore this sculpture is quite new to me. Apart from that, this sculpture draws the attention of the audience to the eyes of Adam and Eve. It is the moment right after they ate the fruit of knowledge. This opened their eyes. The sculptor carved out their iris and now their eyes are full of emptiness… Perhaps the first man and woman had to leave the comfort of God’s love and when faced with the reality and results of the sin, their eyes were filled with emptiness caused by fear.

그런데 그 다음으로 눈이 가는 곳은 이브와 아담의 손이다. 이브는 온 몸을 휩싸는 두려움 앞에서 남편 아담의 손을 꼬옥 쥐고 있다. 그런데 아담은 마치 무엇인가를 붙잡고 싶은데도 달리 쥘 곳이 없는 듯한 손을 허리 아래로 내리고 있다. 
And next, the audience’s attention is led to the hands of Adam and Eve. Seized with fear, Eve is holding - or almost squeezing - her husband’s hand. But Adam, though apparently wishing to find something to hold, drops down his empty left hand under his waist.

작가는 죄를 짓고 그 결과를 대면하는 공포와 공허의 순간을 포착했다. 그리고 이는 아담과 이브의 눈과 아담의 손에서 잘 드러난다. 하지만 그리스도교의 가르침은 바로 그 다음 단계에 있는 것이라고 생각한다. 이브는 아담의 손을 부여잡지만 아담은 포기한 듯 힘이 들어간 손을 하릴없이 그저 허리 아래로 내리고 있다. 만약 그가 손을 들어 하느님을 찾았더라면? 하느님은 그 따스한 손을 내밀어 나약하고 헐벗은 인간을 위로해 주시지 않았을까? 아담의 망설임 덕분에, 인간은 하느님의 외아들 예수가 인간이 되어 우리 가운데로 오시기까지 오랜 시간을 기다려야 했다.
The sculptor captures the moment of fear and emptiness where the first humans commit a sin and face its consequences. And their eyes and hands tellingly show it to that effect. However, I think the truth of Christianity comes at the next move. While Eve is holding Adam’s hand, Adam is lowering down his hand as if he gives up any hope of finding something or someone to hold. But what if he lifted up his hand and sought for God? Wouldn’t God have extended his warm hands towards these vulnerable humans and consoled them? Thanks to Adam’s hesitations, humans had to wait for a long time for the coming of Jesus, the only son of God, among us.

그러나 동시에 아담의 손을 부여잡은 이브의 손은 우리에게 희망의 메시지를 던져 준다. 두려움과 공허함의 그 순간에도 인간이 인간의 손을 잡을 줄 알 때에, 그리고 맞잡은 손이 하느님을 향해 갈 수 있을 때, 용서가 있고 치유가 있고 화해가 있고 평화가 있고 진리가 있는 것이리라…
But, at the same time, Eve’s hand – the hand that is holding Adam’s – gives us a message of hope. Even in the midst of fear and emptiness, if a human can hold another human’s hand, and if their holding hands can be lifted up to God, there will be found forgiveness, healing, reconciliation, peace and truth.
