경각심을 일깨워주는 것 Raising Awareness

교황님의 행보가 계속해서 신선한 충격을 주고 있다.

지난 번 많은 아프리카 난민들이 죽음을 무릎쓰고 유럽으로 올 때

첫 기착지가 되는 람페두사 섬을 방문하신 데 이어서

이번 세계청년대회를 위해 방문하신 브라질에서는

Varginha라는 빈민촌을 직접 방문하신다고 한다...

Pope Francis's move continues to move people's hearts.

After a visit to Lampedusa island, which is the first stop-over 

for many Africans who risk their lives in order to come to Europe for better future,

this time, the Pope, who is visiting Brazil for WYD, is to visit Varginha, 

one of many impoverished villiages in the country.

예수님께서 말씀하셨듯이 가난한 사람들은 언제나 있어 왔다.

우리 속담에 가난은 나라님도 구제못한다고도 했다.

그러나 그렇다고 해서 가난한 사람들에게 무관심해도 좋다는 것은 결코 아닐 터이다.

더 나아가 가난이 계속되는 이유에 대해서도 생각해 보아야 할 것이다.

As Jesus said, there have been the poor all the time in human history.

According to a Korean saying, poverty cannot be overcome even by the government.

However, that does not justify our apathy towards the poor neighbours

nor to the root cause of the poverty. We need to constantly think about that.

다만 우리의 생활은 여러 가지 이유로 항상 바쁘거나 

아니면 우리의 시야를 가리는 여러 가지 요소들로 가득하다.

아무리 중요하고 시급한 일이라도 당장 내 일이거나 가까운 이들이 겪는 일이 아니면

관심을 가지기도 어렵고 그런 일이 있는 줄도 모르기가 십상이다.

It is only that our lives are often filled with busyness

or full of distractions that dissuade us from seeing the world as it is.

Even the important and urgent issues, unless they are our situations 

or something those who are close to us are experiencing,

can be slipped out of our minds or cannot get deserved attention.

어쩌면 교황님은 인류의 한 사람으로서, 고통받는 이들을 위해

마땅히 해야 할 일을 하고 계신 것인지도 모른다.

그러나 그 분이 세계인의 주목을 받는 위치에 계신 만큼,

교황님이 선택하시는 행선지는 사람들의 관심을 받게 된다.

나 역시도 브라질의 빈민촌을 Favela라고 부른다는 것에 대해서,

그리고 그러한 빈민촌이 매우 많다는 점에 대해서 

교황님 덕분으로 처음 알았다.

더 중요한 것은 그 분 덕분으로 우리 신앙인의 의무가 가난하고 고통받는 이들을

기억하고 그들과 함께 하는 데에 있다는 것을 새롭게 깨닫는다는 점이다.

Perhaps, the Pope is doing what he needs to do for the suffering people

as a member of the humanity himself.

But since he is in a position where all the ears and eyes of the world pay attention to,

his move is to attract people's interests necessarily.

For me also, I got to know the fact that Brazilian poor quarters are called 'Favela'

and that there are many such villages in Brazil, thanks to his visit to one of the villages.

More importantly, his visit to the poor and needy reminds me that

our duty as a faithful is to remember and to be with those who are poor and suffering.

일상의 쳇바퀴가 다시금 나의 눈과 귀를 막고 나의 가슴을 차갑게 하기 전에

교황님을 통해 보내시는 하느님의 메세지를 깊이 새겨들어야겠다.

Before my daily routine stops my ears and eyes and cools my hearts again,

I would like to engrave my heart with God's message which is sent through our Holy Father.

아, 오늘 너희가 그분의 소리에 귀를 기울인다면!

너희는 마음을 완고하게 하지 마라.(시편 95장 7-8절)

O that today you would listen to his voice!

Do not harden your hearts.(Ps 95, 7-8)
