수도회와 NGO - Jesuits and NGO

아태 지역구 개발회의 참석차 한국에 오신
콜롬비아 출신 Jorge Eduardo Serrano-Ordonez 신부님을 잠시 만날 기회가 있었다.

I had a chance to meet Fr Jorge Eduardo Serrano-Ordonez SJ
who were visiting Korea for development meeting for AP assistancy.

그분께 'development'의 의미에 대해서 여쭈었는데,
그분의 말씀을 자구대로 다 기억하지는 못하지만
미국에서 사용하는 의미는 단순하게 무엇을 짓는 것이 아니라
상호 관계를 형성하고 나누는 것을 의미한다고 하셨던 것 같다.

I asked him about the meaning of the word 'development'.
I cannot remember what he said word by word,
but as far as I can recall, he said that especially in the meaning
that is usually understood in the U.S.
'development' means to build a relationship and share with others
instead of just constructing buildings.

한편 예수회원으로서 사회 사도직을 하는 것과
일반 사회의 NGO 활동이 어떤 차이를 지니는가에 대해서 여쭈었는데,
수도자로서 하는 활동은 결국 하느님 왕국을 건설하는 데에 있다는 점에서
일반적인 NGO 활동과 차이를 지닐 수 있다고 하셨다.
즉 상대방이 물질적이고 사회적인 도움을 받고 자립할 수 있다는 점에서
끝나는 것이 아니라,
더 나아가 상대방의 삶에 복음적 가치가 자리잡을 수 있게 하는 것까지
나아가고자 하는 것이 우리의 활동 목표라는 말씀이시다...

I also asked him about the differences between social apostolate of Jesuits
and the civil NGO works.
He says that the aim of activities by the religious is in the end
to build the Kingdom of God and that can be a difference between those two.
That is, we are not satisfied with meeting beneficiaries material needs,
but we want to go further where we can help them live in an environment
in which Gospel values are alive.
