성모님의 달 오월 - To our Mother Maria

오월은 성모님의 달이다. 신앙인의 모범으로서 성모 마리아는 내게도 각별한 분이 아닐 수 없으시다.

May is the month dedicated to our Mother Maria. As a perfect example for all the faithful, she is also someone special to me.

코레지오라는 화가가 그린 이 그림을 보면 청순하고 여린 마리아의 모습이 명암의 대조 속에서 인상적으로 다가온다. 나의 친 누나를 연상케 하는 모습이어서 그런지 더욱 의미있게 다가오는 그림이다.

This painting by Corregio depicts the young Jewish girl Maria in an impressive way using light and darkness. Maria in this painting has a spitting image of my own sister to me. Perhaps that's why I like this painting.

그러고 보면 우리 그리스도인들이 믿는 하느님은 참으로 놀라운 분이시다. 이처럼 무명의 한 시골 여인을 통해, 또한 조그마한 아기를 통해 온 인류를 구원할 원대한 계획을 세우시다니. 그 어느 민족과 문화와 종교의 신이 그런 앞뒤 안맞는 생각을 해낼 수 있으랴...

Incidently, the Christian God, to whom we confess our faith, is really amazing. Who could think of the Salvation plan which was carried out by a young unknown country girl and a small child in order to reach to the whole humanity? What kinds of gods and goddesses in various peoples, cultures, and religions could ever think of that unreasonable plan?

우리의 이성으로는 도저히 생각해 낼 수 없는 그 구원의 신비가 이 그림에 담겨 있다. 유대 땅 베들레험 그 작은 고장에서 소리소문도 없이, 조용한 어느 마굿간에서 작은 아기가 태어났다. 그러나 그 아기가 수행할 의무는 이 세상 그 무엇보다도 크고 위대한 것이었다. 그 아기는 바로 하느님이셨다. 생명과 구원의 계획이 우리의 어머니 마리아에게서 한 아기의 모습으로 태어난 이 극적인 순간이 아기에게 비추어진, 아니, 아기로부터 뿜어져 나오는 듯한 빛과 더불어 화폭을 넘어 내 마음으로 은은하게 전해져 오는 듯하다.

In the painting we are witnessing the mystery of that 'unreasonable' character of God's Salvation. A small child was born at a stable in that tiny Jewish town of Bethlehem. But the project this child is to carry out is bigger than the whole Universe. The child was God himself. Through this painting, the dramatic moment of the birth of Salvation is burning silently in my heart. Our Mother Maria just gave a birth to the child, who is an embodiment of Life and Salvation, and the light is shone on this child. Or rather, the light is coming forth from this child.
