Reading the Signs of the Times and Being Awake: A Humble Homily on Lk 21,29-33


My 'first' homily in the community in London. To remind myself of the things I reflected, I would like to share this humble homily in my blog...


“Look at the fig tree and all the trees” Our Lord says.

When I hear these words, I think of the cherry trees in our back garden. Last April, I saw dashing white cherry blossoms on the trees. And soon afterwards in summer, I saw fresh green leaves on them. And soon afterwards now in autumn, I see red and yellow leaves and the trees are shedding their leaves one by one. Sooner or later, we will see barren branches like the end of the world.

This week is the last week of the year according to the Church calendar. We have been reading the passages from Apocalypse as our first reading these days. And the Gospel also bears this atmosphere of immediacy and urgency before the end of the times. In fact, today’s passage is a part of what the biblical scholars call ‘eschatological discourse’ of Jesus during his Jerusalem ministry before the Passion.

This passage is located between the two passages. One that is before today’s passage is about the signs of the times. It says ‘There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves’.

Another one that comes next to today’s passage is about being awake. It says ‘Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap’. I think today’s passage is closely connected to these two themes.

Let me talk about the first one, about ‘reading the signs of the times’ or we can also put it as ‘discernment’. It reminds me of the contemplation of the Holy Trinity in the Second week of the Spiritual Exercises. The Three Persons look at the world: people from different parts of the world, different backgrounds, and different situations… And after looking at them, the Son decides to come down to us in person, the Incarnation! The Holy Trinity’s contemplation bears fruit as a divine action of being incarnate on earth.

Now, I would like to mention my second point, about ‘being awake’. I think being awake can mean to be constantly conscious of standing in front of God. In other words, it can mean that we do not forget God is watching over us. For some, it may sound as if God plays a policeman controlling and judging every single act of our life. But more proper analogy, I believe, would be God like a mother always being alert of her baby and watching over the baby to give protection from any harm.

About this image of standing in front of God, I also would like to share with you a very powerful image from a Danish philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard, from his book ‘The Sickness unto Death’. Let me quote from the book.

 “A herdsman who (if this were possible) is a self only in the sight of cows is a very-low self, and so also is a ruler who is a self in the sight of slaves -- for in both cases the scale or measure is lacking. The child who hitherto has had only the parents to measure himself by, becomes a self when he is a man by getting the state as a measure. But what an infinite accent falls upon the self by getting God as a measure!” 

Yes, we are what we allow ourselves to be. If we do certain things just because we are told to do so, once the things are done, they cannot change us anymore. But, if we do something, thinking that we are doing this because we love God, because we know God is looking at us with his love and mercy, then I believe what we do can transform us, and we become who and what God wants us to be beyond our wildest imagination.

So, first, reading the signs of the times or discernment… and second, being awake or remembering standing in front of God… These two things are what I think Jesus’ message for us today. And what is significant for me is that in both themes, we can see that the contemplation leads to action. Therefore, the messages of Apocalypse in our Christian belief should not be despair and passive resignation but rather should be actions based on contemplation and discernment.

Finally, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” says Our Lord. White cherry blossoms, then green leaves, and then red and yellow leaves, and now fallen leaves… They never fail to change, but that passing itself seems to reflect the never-changing truth of God. The lonely and dark winter is only waiting for the life-giving moment of the spring. The words of our Lord, stronger and more stable even than heaven and earth… I think nothing can be more assuring than this in this day and age of uncertainty…

그리스도왕 대축일 (마태 25,31-46) - Christ the King (Mt 25,31-46)

오늘은 연중 마지막 주일인 그리스도왕 대축일.
미사 강론 서두로 주례 신부님께서 갑자기 우주의 역사와 크기에 대한 과학자들의 연구 결과를 말씀하셨다. 뜬금없는 말씀인가 싶었는데, 신부님의 뜻은 우주 만물의 왕이신 그리스도를 이야기하시려는 것이었다. 그리고 그분은 그저 모든 것을 주재하시는 '왕'인 것만이 아니라 '그리스도'이시기에 우리 각자에게 개인적으로도 오시는 분, 우주의 신비가 큰 만큼 우리들 각자의 신비도 더할 나위 없이 장엄하다는 것... 그리고 그분께 감사드리는 마음을 말씀하신다. 제단 뒤로 높이 걸려 있는 십자고상을 보며 가만히 감사하다고 말씀드려 보았다. 언젠가, 아무런 단서 조건 없이 오롯한 감사의 마음을 드릴 날이 올 수 있을까? 그것을 위해 일상을 사는 것이고 영적인 수행을 하는 것이다.
Today is the last week of the ordinary time in Church calendar: Christ the King.
At the start of his homily, the father suddenly spoke about scientific facts about the age and size of the universe. I was wondering why he said those things and it turned out that he was emphasising Christ is the King of everything in the universe. At the same time, He is not only 'the King' who governs the world but also 'the Christ' who personally comes to each one of us. As much as the mystery of the universe is profound, the mystery of our individual human person is also majestic, he says. And he encourages us to say thanks to God. Looking at the crucifix hung above the altar, I whispered a thank-you to Him in my heart. Can I say someday a thank-you to Him unconditionally? I live my daily life and perform spiritual exercises for that.

오늘 복음 말씀은 흔히들 마태 복음에서 '최후의 심판'을 떠올리는 부분이다. 다시금 읽으면서 눈에 들어오는 것은, 의로운 이들이나 그렇지 못한 이들이나 자신들이 한 일, 혹은 하지 않은 일에 대해서 크게 의식하지 않고 있다는 점이다. 좋은 일을 했다고 해서 그것을 행한 자신을 크게 생각하지도 않고, 좋은 일을 하지 않았다고 해서 그런 일을 할 기회를 생각하지도 않는다. 결국 덕 윤리학에서 이야기하듯이 매 순간 순간을 복음의 가치에 기초해서 살아가려는 노력이 어느 새 제2의 천성이 되어버리면 굳이 의로운 일과 자비를 베풀었다고 해서 우쭐대거나 스스로를 높이 살 것도 없이 될 것이다. 또한 복음의 가치가 삶에 스며들기보다는 그저 남들에게 보이기 위해서, 혹은 마지못해 규율을 따르는 것에 불과하다면 굳이 의로운 일과 자비를 베풀 기회를 나서서 찾지도 않을 것이고 그런 행위를 하지 않은 것을 의식하지도 못할 것이다.
Today's gospel is a part in Matthews which people often associate with the Last Judgement. Reading the passage again, what strikes me is that whether the righteous or not, both of them are not conscious of what they did or did not do. Neither do the righteous think highly of themselves because of their good deeds, nor the evil think about the lost opportunities in which they could've performed acts of goodness. After all, as virtue ethics stresses, if our efforts to live out the gospel values become our second nature, we wouldn't boast about our righteous and merciful deeds. On the other hand, if the gospel values are just for a show or become an external rule, we wouldn't bother to look out for the opportunities to do something righteous and merciful, let alone are conscious of them.

예수께서는 당신의 형제자매들인 '가장 작은 이들 가운데 한 사람'에게 베푸는 행위가 곧 당신께 베푸는 행위라고 하신다. 이들 가장 작은 이들은 누구일까. 복음이 참으로 내 삶의 방향타가 되려면 복음 말씀이 가리키는 것이 무엇인지를 매 번 내 삶 속에서 새롭게 찾아야 할 것이다. 반드시 눈에 띄게 소외되고 있는 이들만이 아니라, 지금 이 순간 하느님 복음의 빛 안에서 평온을 누리지 못하고 삶의 무게에 짓눌려 남몰래 신음하는 이들도 세상 앞에서 한없이 작아진 이들이다. 그런 만큼 가깝고 먼 곳의 이웃들이 어떤 마음으로 살아가고 있는지 귀기울여 들을 줄 알아야겠다. 그 길은 곧 '나' 자신만의 틀을 벗어나 주님을 내 삶의 중심으로 모시는 길이다.
Jesus says the deeds done to 'one of the least of them', who are His brothers and sisters, are done to Him. Who are these 'least people' in my life? If the gospel is to be rudder and compass of my life, I have to see with a new perspective what it says means in my life. Maybe, those least people are not only those who are explicitly excluded from the society but also those who are suffering inwardly under the heavy burden of life without peace. Then I have to be more careful to listen to those inner cries of my neighbours far and near. That is the way to get out of my shell of 'ego' and serve the Lord in the innermost sanctuary in my heart.
