A homily of hope and courage

I read Easter Vigil homily by newly-elected Pope Francis on the Internet.
He asked we open our hearts to Jesus' invitation to Newness,
that we depend on Him without giving up.
He also pointed out that the strength to do that
would come from remembering His words and deeds.

I came back to Korea from Myanmar about a week ago,
and I find myself to be dragged into the swamp of my usual daily patterns.
Our pope's homily gave me hope and courage.

Total trust -

To visit foreign countries as non-national,
we need to take care of many things such as passport, visa, and air-tickets...
Due to the red-tape, which does not care about personal situations,
I am having a hard time in Manila.
So many times have I decided to learn how to totally trust in God,
but now with this small discomfort and uncertainty,
I totally forget about Him again... Help my unbelief...

- God provides

So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided. - Gen 22,14

Early in the morning, I left for a journey - one week of absense away from my workplace. I packed and checked my travel documents, toiletries, and other personal things carefully already. But only after I arrived at the destination, I realised I did not bring enough amount of money. Since I had to think in terms of foreign currency, I made a mistake in calculation.

Then I met a priest in the dining room by chance. He said he did not need much money anymore since he would depart from the country tonight. And he kindly donated(?) some money to me so that I could add it to my travel expenses. Bearing a bit of shame but quite gladly and gratefully, I thanked him and received the money. And the story of Abraham came across my mind...

Passage to Myanmar

Finally today, I am flying to Yangon, Myanmar.
For the last couple of months, I've been downsizing what I had in my room
and tried to pack things as compact as I could.
But right at the airport, I made a scene out of it to unpack and repack to make it slimmer.
But for the helps I got from the brothers who kindly came out to the airport
so early in the morning, it could have been really embarrassing.

Maybe He is telling me that I should throw away things that I do not need anymore.
It is just that I could not do it by myself...

My mind is both fearful and hopeful at the gate of a totally different new world ahead of me.
I pray that I would never forget God's presence close to me...

Thank you, Electric Fan!

The remaining heat of the last summer is lingering
at the footsteps of the upcoming autumn.

I do not turn on electric fans usually,
but this summer, I used my fan many times.
Such a hot summer it was.
The fan is working but quite old and even a bit broken.
Still, it is okay.

Today, while I was putting my hand on the fan's button
undecided whether to turn it on or not,
I stared at the fan with fixed eyes.
When the weather gets more chilly, it will go back to the store room.
Like with human beings, there is a time to depart with an inanimate object?
Can I also leave without any regret after I finish my job on earth
as if I have to say good-bye to my fan soon?

Compassion

Have you ever felt that we are pitiful beings? Although each of us does our best, either by human or by heaven, it happens that things are not going well and that we undergo loads of agonies. Humans are destined that way?

Before being taken to the Cross, during a long good-bye, Jesus felt strong pity and compassion for the disciples because they looked like an orphan without a father. For us, pitiful humans perhaps, the only place to turn to is God's grace.

Funeral Mass

I always feel solemn when I attend a funeral mass.
It already deserves respect that the departed lived out his life until the heaven calls him back home.
And in the funeral service, I am given an opportunity to reflect on the importance of 'well-dying' in this world where so many people are only interested in 'well-being'.
